Are Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez Full Brothers?
Yes. Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez are full brothers.
They share the same mother and the same father. They are not half-brothers, and the different last names do not change that fact.
The confusion is easy to understand. One brother uses Sheen, and the other uses Estevez. The reason lies in their family history, not in a different parent.
The Short Answer
- Father: Martin Sheen, born Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez
- Mother: Janet Templeton, also known as Janet Sheen
- Relationship: Full brothers, with the same two parents
- Other siblings: Ramón Estevez and Renée Estevez
Emilio is the eldest child. Charlie is younger, born about three years later.
Why Do They Have Different Last Names?
Martin Sheen was born Ramón Estévez. When he started acting in New York in the late 1950s, he adopted Martin Sheen as a stage name.
He has said he never legally changed his name. His legal name remained Ramón Estévez.
His sons then made different professional choices:
- Emilio Estevez kept the family birth name. His father urged him not to make the same change. Emilio has said the choice was about honouring his heritage and building a career under his own name.
- Charlie Sheen took his father’s stage name. He was born Carlos Irwin Estévez. He began using Charlie as a child, to avoid confusion with an uncle also named Carlos. As an actor, he adopted Sheen, the professional name his father had already made famous.
So, in short: Estevez is the family birth name. Sheen is the father’s stage name, later used by Charlie.

Emilio became known in the 1980s as part of the Brat Pack group of young actors. He played Andrew Clark in The Breakfast Club (1985) and Kirby Keger in St. Elmo’s Fire (1985).
He later starred as Coach Gordon Bombay in The Mighty Ducks films (1992–1996). He also moved into writing and directing, with films including Wisdom (1986), Men at Work (1990), Bobby (2006), and The Way (2010).
Charlie became known for film roles in Platoon (1986), Wall Street (1987), and Major League (1989). He later starred in the television sitcom Two and a Half Men.
Their styles differ. Emilio has built a long career both in front of and behind the camera. Charlie became one of the most recognisable film and television stars of his generation.
Films They Made Together
Despite their different surnames, the brothers have worked together on screen several times:
- Young Guns (1988) — Emilio played Billy the Kid, and Charlie played Dick Brewer.
- Men at Work (1990) — Emilio wrote, directed, and starred in the comedy alongside Charlie.
- Rated X (2000) — Emilio directed the film, in which both brothers starred.
Their joint work is one reason fans keep asking about the connection. On screen, they play brothers, colleagues, and rivals. Off screen, they are brothers.
What About Their Father?
Martin Sheen is central to both careers. He is a well-known actor in his own right, with roles spanning decades, including President Josiah Bartlet in The West Wing.
He has spoken openly about regretting his own name change. That regret shaped his advice to Emilio: keep the family name.
Charlie has taken a different view. He has used Sheen for most of his career, with one notable exception: he was billed as Carlos Estévez in Machete Kills (2013).

Final Answer
Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez are full brothers.
They have the same mother, Janet Templeton, and the same father, Martin Sheen, born Ramón Estévez. The surname difference comes from a stage name, not from a different family.
One kept the birth name. The other carried on his father’s professional name. That is the whole story behind the two names.
